Everyone Needs a Sherri (Being a Widow is not fun)
Christmas dinner at the church, I did not want to go. I don't do well in crowds. I have been relegated to the widows table
No longer half of a couple, the laughing, soft touch on the shoulder reminding them they aren't alone. They sit together sharing a secret look, a forever bond. A magnet that draws them back together when they are feeling a bit out of place. no matter where they go, or what is going on, they have one another.
Sitting at the widows table. I tried to find the mask I wear all the time hiding my pain and sorrow. I don't want to make others feel bad. It is hard enough that I feel like my world has ended.
My friend, Sherri leaned over and said, you're widows basket is in your car. I know how hard this is for you. so you can leave any time.
Widow's basket.... why would I get a widow's basket?
She didn't have to say a word. I should know I am a widow. I don't feel like a widow
Another reminder of my lost position in life.
I hugged my friend. Everyone should have a Sherri in their life. she takes care of me. She shields me as much as she can, and she lets me talk to Rick when I am missing Van's humor. Rick and Van were like brothers, they were cut from the same mold, the same uncanny sense of humor. They can make you laugh every day...Rick can say the most off the wall things and immediately I am right there with Van saying the very same thing!! Rick turned my sober would never do anything silly, husband, into a man that rode a penny horse!!
Rick and Sherri were there when Van was being worked on by the paramedics, they followed me to the hospital. She was there when they took us to a room to give me the life changing can't be true news. She got me water and tissues. (how she knew where to find them in the hospital I'll never know.)
Sherri was there to help my children and I wade through the funeral process. She reminded me of all the little details like a casket spray, clothes for the funeral home, etc.
My friends let me know where they are camping even though they want to be alone.
Everyone needs a Rick and Sherri and in their life.
